MEGALITHIC TOMB

MEGALITHIC TOMB, WEDGE TOMB?

What is recorded here

Wedge tombs are the oldest built chambers in Europe. They are also the least understood. The oldest ones in the world are in Ireland. That is a fact. What they are is not. A chamber tomb is a chamber tomb anywhere. A box with a door. The dead went in the box. The living closed the door. The wedge shape appears later. It is not the same build. It is a different choice. I want to know when the choice changed and why. Everything else is a man holding a camera in the dark.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as MEGALITHIC TOMB - WEDGE TOMB?. Recorded period: PREHISTORIC; UNCERTAIN. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
Wedge tomb, dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (c. 2500–1000 BCE). Its presence in Ballymoney suggests a wider pattern of megalithic funerary practice in the northern part of the island of Ireland.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
