What is recorded here

This site is located in upland pasture on the crest of a ridge that extends SW from Aghatubrid mountain. It commands a wide outlook to Valencia Harbour at NW and Ballinskelligs Bay at S. The early ecclesiastical site of Kilpeacan (KE088-015001-) lies about 200m to ENE. The site consists of a roughly rectangular arrangement of upright slabs, open at W, measuring approximately 3.7m ENE-WSW x 2m NNW-SSE. Two uprights occur 1.85m E of this arrangement. The N side of the monument is composed of three uprights, ranging from .3m to 1m high. A possible packing stone occurs outside the upright at E, and measures .14m high. An upright, .25m high x .6m wide, and a large recumbent slab, now partly overgrown by sod, 2.2m x 1.05m x .2m, delineates its S side. Two uprights occur close to the E end of the monument, one set inside the line of the other. The upright at N is disposed at right angles to the E end of the middle stone at the N side, and measures .97m high and .66m x .18m at base. The upright at S measures .73m x 1.49m x .2m thick. Outside the monument to E, the two uprights, set one behind the other, maintain a roughly similar alignment to its S side. They average .3m high and .75m wide x .11m thick. The site has been interpreted as the remains of a megalithic tomb by Henry (1957, 84). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1469. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 1 August 2013
