Maurice FitzGerald, 6th Duke of Leinster

Birthplace

What is recorded here

Maurice FitzGerald, born at Kilkea Castle in 1887, inherited the largest private estate in Ireland at age six after his father died of typhoid fever. The family lost forty-five thousand acres to tenant farmers in 1903, stripping the ancient dukedom of its physical foundation before Maurice reached adulthood. He spent his final fifteen years isolated in a private villa at Craig House Hospital in Edinburgh, attended by a butler and physician, dying at thirty-five without ever marrying or reclaiming the lands that defined his name.
