Mass-rock in Sandhill

Mass-rock

What is recorded here

This stone-built altar like arrangement has been identified as a place where, during Penal times (1690s to 1750s), mass was celebrated. In recent years the site has been marked by a plaque and provided with public access. Compiled by: Paul Walsh Date of upload: 28 October 2013
This mass-rock is associated with the clandestine celebration of Catholic Mass during the Penal era in Ireland, when Catholic worship was suppressed. Such sites were often linked to local priests who risked persecution to serve their communities, and they hold deep religious and historical significance for the area’s Catholic heritage.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
