Mass-rock in Cró Na Roda

Mass rock situated in upland river vallley beside old road which has been incorporated into the SE facing field boundary on the N side of the mountain road. Site consists of a flat slab (L c. 0.9m; Wth 0.15m) which is resting on smaller stones beneath forming an altar which is known locally as the mass rock (pers. comm. S. O'Beirne). The mass rock is situated beside a mountain road on rising land in a mountain river valley overlooking the valley below to the SW with higher ground to the NE. Linked to the celebration of Catholic Mass during the Penal Times when open worship was forbidden, mass rocks like this one in Cró Na Roda served as clandestine sites for religious gatherings.
