Mary Elizabeth Byrne translated the ancient prayer Rob tu mo bhoile into Be Thou My Vision in 1905, giving a forgotten Middle Irish voice a living English shape. She won a first-class masters degree that same year and spent her later life helping build the Royal Irish Academy dictionary. Her mind moved through layers of time, pulling ancient words forward until they could still be spoken.
