Martin Archer Shee was born in County Dublin, Ireland in 1769, the son of a merchant who later became President of the Royal Academy. He studied in his native city before moving to London in 1788, where he painted kings, generals and politicians until his death in Brighton at eighty. The boy from Dublin climbed to the top of British art, forcing the establishment to acknowledge a man it had nearly forgotten.
