Marquis de St Ruth

Place of death

What is recorded here

Charles Chalmont, Marquis de St Ruth, died at Aughrim on July 12, 1691, after leading Jacobite forces through the bloody Williamite wars. He had previously burned Savoy dwellings to collect French taxes and arrived in Ireland with artillery salutes and royal pride. The Galway field where he fell may still hold the shape of that sudden end, a French marquis swallowed by a war he never understood.

Why this person is known: French general (c. 1650-1691)
