Maria Christian was born Maria McCabe in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland, in 1965, entering the world through a poverty-stricken mother in a mother and baby home. She lost her eyesight at nine to Stargardt's genetic disease yet kept singing, and at nineteen she carried that voice to the Eurovision Song Contest, placing sixth with "Wait Until The Weekend Comes." Dundalk did not give her sight or ease; it gave her the hunger that carried her across borders, into French family life, and back onto global stages.
