This stone commemorative plaque records: On this site stood the smithy of William Skelhorn at which Queen Margaret had her horse's shoes reversed to aid her escape from the Battle of Blore Heath 23rd September 1450
Queen Margaret of Anjou was a key figure in the Wars of the Roses, fighting to protect her husband King Henry VI's Lancastrian dynasty; William Skelhorn was a local blacksmith whose smithy played a crucial role in aiding Margaret’s escape after the Battle of Blore Heath.
