Margaret Elizabeth Noble was born in Dungannon, County Tyrone, on 28 October 1867, the daughter of a linendraper and a woman named Mary Isabel. She left that small world behind, became Sister Nivedita in India, and gave herself to teaching girls, nursing plague victims, and writing about Hindu life until she died in Darjeeling in 1911. Her epitaph says she gave her all to India, which makes her birthplace sound like the quiet beginning of a life spent elsewhere.
