Maol Mhòr rises to approximately 550 metres and is part of the rugged landscape of the Cowal Peninsula, characterised by ancient Dalradian sedimentary rocks. Its name, meaning "Great Bald Hill" in Gaelic, reflects its prominent, treeless summit; it holds local significance as a landmark within the wild and sparsely populated terrain of Argyll.
