Manliffe Goodbody was born in Dublin on 20 November 1868, the son of Marcus Goodbody and Hannah Woodcock Perry. He became a celebrated tennis and football player, winning the North of Ireland Championships three times and reaching the final of the 1894 U.S. National Championships. His life ended abruptly on 24 March 1916 when the SS Sussex was torpedoed in the English Channel, cutting short a career that had touched both Irish and international sports.
