Man-made underground passage (Site of)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Yes. West Cork still keeps the shape of a hidden chamber inside a cliff-edge fort. A shallow rectangular hole and a narrower extension at its northeast corner suggest a passage that collapsed rather than a hole dug for a garden or hearth. People may have descended there in darkness, listening for seawater or waiting for a message from below. The earth took the roof back, but it never erased the reason the chamber existed.
In cliff-edge fort (CO118-004001-). Rectangular depression (L 2.4m; Wth 1.9m; D 0.6m) with extension (L 1.6m; Wth 0.8m; D 0.4m) at NE corner may indicate position of collapsed Man-made underground passage. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
