Man-made underground passage (Site of)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

West Cork farmed flint, not fantasy. The site is a chambered passage, partly collapsed but still traceable beneath the soil. Its width and depth match human labour, not cave chance. The region sustained dense settlement because its coasts, inlets and stone supply supported life.
In W half of ringfort (CO060-149001-). Hartnett (1939, 89) recorded an opening '42in wide x 28in high'; downward slope led to collapsed stone-lined passage roofed with slabs. According to local information, there were several chambers. Hartnett (ibid.) also noted 'it can be traced on the surface for a distance of 20 feet'. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
