What is recorded here
Beneath Moneyscalp in County Down, a man-made passage and possible rath wait in darkness. Built during the Christian era, the exact date remains uncertain, but human hands shaped stone or earth to create a hidden space. Perhaps people entered with lanterns, avoided storms, or kept secrets from the cold Irish sky. The passage still exists, unchanged and patient, remembering every footprint that vanished behind it.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as Man-made underground passage & ?RATH. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.; UNCERTAIN. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
