Inside a Galway ringfort, a hidden Z-shaped passage once offered three chambers and a smaller room for shadowed use. Costello sketched its unusual shape in 1903, but collapse has since swallowed the entrance and left only shallow hollows across the ground. The lost rooms may have stored treasure, sheltered people or served a forgotten ritual, yet the earth has taken back even the shape of their purpose.

Within a ringfort (GA016-118----). A plan of this Man-made underground passage drawn up by Costello (1903, 5-6) indicates that was roughly Z-shaped in plan and consisted of at least three chambers with a smaller subsidiary chamber. The monument is now inaccessible and partially collapsed. It is indicated by a series of hollows, running E-W, suggesting that it was at least 11m in length The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'.
