Shanaknock ringfort in County Cork once hid a man-made underground passage, now lost beneath soil and railway works. Bowman recorded the passage in 1934, while Broker later wondered whether flags caught in the railway water table marked a southern exit. The fort interior has since become overgrown, erasing every visible trace of the hole, the flags or the route they may have guarded.

In ringfort (CO038-02301-); S edge of ringfort destroyed by railway. Broker (1937, 50) noted that 'flags found in water table of railway may indicate a passage to the South'. Bowman (1934, 310) also noted that a 'Man-made underground passage was in this fort, but is now filled in'. Interior of ringfort overgrown; no visible surface trace.
