Shanacashel holds a lost passage because a thrashing machine broke its roof in 1935. The sudden collapse may have swallowed the entrance, deleted the marker and left behind only a field that sounds different when the wind moves through it.

McCarthy (1977, 381) noted from a report in the Cork Examiner, 1935, that a thrashing machine in field caused roof [of possible Man-made underground passage] to collapse'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
