Man-made underground passage in Riverstown

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Drystone-built Man-made underground passage, L-shaped in plan, consisting of two passages and a beehive chamber. Passage 1 (L 8m, Wth 1.2m, H 1.3m) gently curves NE-W, terminating in drop-hole which gives access to Passage 2 (L 10.5m, Wth 1.1m, H 1.4m) running E-W (5.2m) then turning N-S (5.3m). This passage terminates at N end in a beehive chamber (diam. 2.4m, H 1.4m).
