Man-made underground passage in Rearahinagh

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Rearahinagh holds a man-made underground passage in the southern part of its ringfort, now closed to visitors. The chamber likely served people who lived beside the fort, giving them dry storage or a hidden place when storms broke across West Cork. Its exact purpose has faded, but the cut stone and narrow darkness still suggest human hands shaping the earth for survival or secrecy.
Underground chamber in S part of ringfort (CO133-033001-), according to local information; now closed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
