You are standing in a chamber the size of a small room, cut into living rock beneath an ancient fort in County Clare. The passage is short, narrow and partly roofed with irregular lintels, but the chamber itself is real: a dark, human-made space hidden under open ground. That is what makes it striking. People dug through solid stone, fitted stones across the top and left a room behind the effort. Whether the chamber stored things, excluded people or marked the fort in a way we no longer remember, the act is still clear.

NW of centre in an inland promontory fort (CL005-153----). A Man-made underground passage comprising an unroofed partially rock-cut trench which opens near the centre of the fort and runs N (L 1.7m; Wth 0.7m). The trench then turns NE (L 3.5m; 0.85-1.1m; D 0.7-0.9m), and part of this section (L 2m) is roofed with three irregular lintels. Finally, it joins a chamber (c. 4m NE-SW; 3.4m NW-SE; D 1.6m) visible as a depression filled with rubble and hazel scrub. A narrow depression reminiscent of a collapsed passage (Wth 1m; L c. 10m) runs SE from the chamber potentially indicating a continuation of the feature.
