Oughtdarra holds a hidden chamber because a 1780 letter described an underground stone-cut crypt near the Abbey of St Daragh. Whether that is the same as the passage noted thirty yards from the church remains unclear. The Burren keeps its dead beneath green turf, waiting for someone to find the opening again.

A Man-made underground passage ‘said to be 30yds SSW of church’ is noted on the SMR file (‘OPW files, Sheet 4’). On field inspection in 1998 the Man-made underground passage was not visible. Warren (1892, 445-6) references a letter of 1780 published in the ‘Saunders News-letter’ from ‘Burren, in the county of Clare’, describing an underground stone-cut burial chamber or crypt with an undated memorial stone ‘near the Abbey of St Daragh’.
