What is recorded here
No modern lens or permanent marker exists for that absence. Bowman and Broker separated facts from invention, yet they recorded an underground passage inside a ringfort. The men knew the difference between a visible chamber and a vanished claim. They wrote down what the land still showed and stopped before inventing the rest.
In ringfort (CO029-074---). Bowman (1934, 267) noted that a 'depression, on the north side of interior shows site of Man-made underground passage'. Also recorded by Broker (1937, 53). No visible surface trace.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
