Man-made underground passage in Levallyroe (costello By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Levallyroe hides a closed creep hole beneath its outer bank, where a vertical stone and horizontal lintel still mark the entrance. Knox witnessed that boundary in 1911, yet the passage itself has vanished from sight. What remains is a stone-ringed suggestion: someone dug through, stopped others entering, and let the earth take back the hole.
In a rath (MA103-030001-). Knox (1911, 231) noted that ‘In the outside of the outer ring is a vertical stone about two feet high, a little in advance of the ring. Beside it to the south is a large horizontal stone in the ring [outer bank], which may be the lintel of a closed creep hole.’ Two large stones are evident in the external bank at E, one on its inner face, one on its outer face, but not in line with each other. There is no visible evidence that either represents part of a Man-made underground passage. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 November 2022
