Man-made underground passage in Knocks (carbery East (e.d) By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Knocks holds a man-made underground passage marked only by a sunken area in the northeast quadrant of its ringfort. The earth itself has forgotten the shape of the tunnel, keeping just a shallow dish where human hands cut through soil and stone. That much is clear. What is missing is the voice that first walked the dark, the reason the passage was built, and the moment it stopped being a living road.
Sunken area in NE quadrant ringfort (CO122-005001-) indicates position of Man-made underground passage. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
