Man-made underground passage in Kilvinane

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Kilvinane held a man-made underground passage near a burial ground until collapse buried it again. The chamber closed so quickly that people stopped looking for the exact spot. What remains is a missing shape in the earth, perhaps a doorway, perhaps a trap, but no longer visible to argue with.
Earthen chamber collapsed some years ago near burial ground (CO108-056---) infilled immediately. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
