Man-made underground passage in Killuney

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Killuney hides a man-made passage beneath its old avenue, running southeast toward the sinking river. The tunnel vanished without a surface trace, leaving only memory and mystery behind the ringfort. What the builders knew about water, shadow and secret movement still breathes through the quiet ground.
Associated with ringfort (GA017-116----). According to Neary (1914, 111, no. 81), 'a Man-made underground passage ran S.E. to the Sinking River under the old avenue'. Locally it is believed that there is a 'tunnel' within the ringfort but no visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
