Man-made underground passage in Gortavallig

In a rath (KE108-023001-). A stone lintel (Wth 0.85m; T 0.2m) is visible in the N half of the rath. Beneath it is a passage (D 0.4m) that appears to extend in a NW direction. A depression (c. 1.6m NW-SE; c. 2m SW-NE) occurs immediately NW of the lintel and in its base are a number of openings which reveal an underground chamber or passage (D 1.2m). Piles of earth noted on the floor of the passage may be due to collapse or to animal burrowing. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry.
