Man-made underground passage in Gortacareen

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under the Gortacareen rath, a hidden passage waits for patience. Men digging drainage struck it, pulled back in fear or wonder, and buried it again. The earth keeps what it does not understand.
In a rath (KE068-032----). According to local information, a Man-made underground passage was uncovered by drainage works many years ago but is now covered over. There are no visible remains of this possible Man-made underground passage. It may be the 'cave' recorded in the 1940s in a rath in this townland (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011
