Man-made underground passage in Glanballyma

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Glanballyma is a man-made underground passage hidden inside a Kerry ringfort, recorded as a cave on an 1841 map but absent from the surface in 1985. The missing entrance may have been buried by soil, forgotten by livestock, or swallowed by the slope. The cave may still exist beneath the pasture, waiting for rain, root or curiosity to reveal it.
In pasture, on a S-facing slope. On the 1st ed. (1841) OS 6-inch map a ‘cave’, suggesting the presence of a Man-made underground passage, is depicted within the interior of a ringfort (KE022-015----) at W. No visible surface trace of the Man-made underground passage was evident when surveyed in 1985. Compiled by: Matt Kelleher Date of upload: 28 February 2014
