Man-made underground passage in Donoure Middle

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Donoure Middle holds a shallow collapse, barely a metre across and ten centimetres deep, just west of the ringfort centre. That small dimple may mark a buried passage rather than ordinary ground failure. A person could have cut through solid earth to hide, escape or reach another chamber without being seen. The dirt forgot the shape of the tunnel, but it never erased the reason someone bothered to dig beneath the fort.
In ringfort (8261); just W of centre. Shallow collapse (1m x 1m; D 0.10m) may indicate position of possible Man-made underground passage. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
