Man-made underground passage in Cuillaun (gallen By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

West of the Cuillaun rath, beneath the garden of a modern house, a hidden stone chamber waits in darkness. People have forgotten whether it served as a shelter, a treasury or a temple, but the stones still hold their shape under the grass. The residence sits above a buried room, suggesting that human cleverness and ambition stretched downward as well as upward.
Located to W of a rath (MA062-087001-). A ‘stone chamber’ was noted at roughly this location (pers. comm. F. McCann, 1991). No other details were reported. There is no visible trace at ground level. The location now lies within the garden of a modern house. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 7 December 2020

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
