Man-made underground passage in Cragballyconoal

In the SE quadrant of a cashel (CL005-160020-) in elevated rocky pasture surrounded by level ground with restricted views and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL005-160001-). The enclosing cashel is hachured on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps, but the Man-made underground passage is not indicated. An L-plan Man-made underground passage with an opening (L 0.8m; Wth 0.8m) to the SE of the centre of the cashel garth. The passage is rock-cut and roofed with stone lintels for most of its course; it runs SE (L 4m; Wth 0.75m; H 0.85-0.95m), before turning NNE (L 6m; Wth 0.9-1.1m; H 0.9-1m), terminating in a rock-cut V. A small aumbry (L 0.3; Wth 0.3m; D 0.3m) is located in the SE wall of the latter section of the passage.
