Man-made underground passage in Cragballyconoal

In the N half of a cashel (CL005-160017-) in elevated rocky pasture on a SW-facing slope overlooked by higher ground to the N and E with extensive views to the S and W. Within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL005-160001-). The enclosing cashel is hachured on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. Described by Westropp (1899, 372) as a ‘straight Man-made underground passage, 3 feet wide, leading under the [cashel] wall’. A Man-made underground passage defined by a trench (L 7m; Wth 1.2-1.6m; D 0.6m) extending N from the centre of the cashel garth. Stone lintels survive at the S end. The trench is filled with rubble along the centre and with earth at its S end. It is unclear if the Man-made underground passage extends beneath the cashel wall at N. A cashel (CL005-160019-) with a Man-made underground passage (CL005-160045-) is located c. 80m to the S, and an enclosure (CL005-160051-) is located c. 50m to the N.    Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Eve Campbell   Date of upload: 7 October 2025
