Man-made underground passage in Corderry

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Corderry is an artificial underground chamber that local memory still calls a cave. The name is a mistake born of fear, since the chamber has a purpose and a maker. People can be certain the chamber is not natural because its shape and function are clear. The chamber may have stored goods, hidden people or marked a boundary, but it is no longer unknown.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Local tradition of a 'cave' causing road subsidence.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
