Man-made underground passage in Coomlogane

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

No visible passage remains in Coomlogane, though Broker recorded a central flag marking a covered hole inside the levelled ringfort during his 1937 visit. The earth has swallowed the entrance, denying later curious feet the descent Broker may have mapped. What raged or whispered in that dark tube has joined the many unnamed Cork losses, preserved only in a single line of field notes.
In levelled ringfort (8216). Broker (1937, 47) recorded 'flag in centre, hole now covered'. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
