Man-made underground passage in Coolykeerane

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Coolykeerane hides a man-made underground passage beside its ringfort, probably collapsed into the shallow depression still visible in the ground. Whatever chamber once stood there has surrendered its shape to time, leaving only a dimple for the eye and a suggestion for the imagination. People may have stored, hidden, worshipped or simply passed through beneath that soil. The passage has stopped answering questions, but it still occupies the landscape, waiting to be imagined rather than measured.
In NW quadrant of ringfort (CO038-02101-). Shallow depression may indicate collapsed Man-made underground passage chamber. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
