Coolgarriv hides a man-made underground passage inside an old fort, with two shallow depressions marking a collapsed chamber and a blocked entrance waiting beneath the soil. A local writer mentioned connected underground chambers near the railway in 1939, while later notes described the hidden opening in the fort’s centre. The passage may have let people move through Coolgarriv when storms, darkness or danger closed the fields above.

In a rath (KE066-040----). Two depressions (L c. 1m; Wth 1m; D 0.25m) in the SW quadrant of the rath may indicate a collapsed Man-made underground passage chamber. According to a local correspondent writing in 1939, the rath had 'underground chambers' which connected to a Man-made underground passage (KE066-041----) on the E side of the railway (SMR file). This is probably the 'blocked entrance to a Man-made underground passage', recorded in the 1940s in the centre of an 'old fort' (ITA).
