Man-made underground passage in Coolanarney

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under Coolanarney, a man-made passage cut through the earth and crossed the road to the south inside the ringfort. Broker recorded it in 1937, but trees now fill the fort and no surface trace remains. The passage may have let people bypass a barrier, enter a hidden chamber or leave the settlement without being seen. Whatever it did, the earth has taken it back, leaving only the memory of a hole that went through the world.
In ringfort (8188). Broker (1937, 46) recorded an 'underground passage crossing road to south'. Interior of ringfort planted with trees. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
