Man-made underground passage in Carrowmacloughlin (carra By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Carrowmacloughlin holds two hidden underground passages inside a bivallate cashel, one beside a round house at the south wall and one at the centre. Neither showed itself in 1983, and by 2025 the interior had become so overgrown that no one could walk through it. The earth may be waiting for someone patient enough to listen for hollow sounds beneath the roots.
In the interior of a bivallate cashel (MA070-039001-). When inspected in 1983 (SMR file), a local tradition was recorded that the cashel contained two Man-made underground passages; one associated with a round house (MA070-039002-) abutting the inner face of the cashel wall at S and the other at the centre of the monument. Neither was visible on that inspection. When reinspected in 2025, the interior of the cashel was found to be totally overgrown and impenetrable in places.
