Man-made underground passage in Carrowcushlaun West

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

No visible passage exists in Carrowcushlaun West, yet the hidden route may still belong to the area because memory has drawn it there. That is not the same as certainty. It is a shape formed by attention, comparison and the life of the place.
This record is based on a reference in the Western People, dated 5th Feb 1933, to the local tradition that a Man-made underground passage (MA030-079----) in Gurteens, on the W side of Ballina, extended under the Moy and exited at Palmyra, Ardnaree, on the E bank of the river. It is not possible that a Man-made underground passage extends beneath the Moy, but the tradition does suggest that an opening to a Man-made underground passage was at one time known in the Ardnaree area of Ballina. Its exact location, however, remains unknown. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 6 June 2018
