Man-made underground passage in Carrigacooleen

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Carrigacooleen ringfort (8124) hid an underground chamber that Broker (1937, 44) found already closed, perhaps sealed by people who wanted to keep its contents, memories or dangers out of ordinary reach. A large stone near the centre may still mark the entrance, waiting for someone brave enough to lift it and ask what the chamber was built to protect.
Broker (1937, 44) mentioned an 'underground chamber' which was 'closed' in ringfort (8124). Large stone lying near centre may mark its location. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
