Man-made underground passage in Caher (magunihy By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under a great eminence behind Mrs. McKay's house in County Kerry, a whole series of man-made underground passages waited for local explorers as late as the 1940s. People walked those hidden routes until the entrances vanished from memory and land. The passage may still breathe beneath the field, holding the shape of hands that dug it and feet that ran it dark.
In the 1940s a 'great eminence [see KE066-085001-]' underneath which was a 'whole series of Man-made underground passages, the entrances to which are now impossible to locate' was recorded in the second field to the rear of Mrs. McKay's house' (ITA). It was also mentioned that local people were able to enter and explore the Man-made underground passages 'as late as 40 years ago' (ibid.). These Man-made underground passages have not been precisely located. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork.
