Barrinclay holds a man-made underground passage in the southwest quadrant of ringfort 8085, marked by a large stone in a circular hollow and a strip of stunted grass extending two and a half metres. The passage may have let people move through the fort when storms closed the ordinary gates or hidden them when danger approached. It still smells of rain, stone and forgotten footsteps.
