Ballypherode holds a circular depression beside a field fence, possibly the collapsed roof of an underground passage built inside an ancient ringfort. The shape suggests people dug beneath a defended settlement, perhaps creating a hidden route, storage space or escape path when danger approached. The passage has vanished, but the depression remains as a quiet mark of human ambition beneath ordinary farmland.
