Man-made underground passage in Ballintava — Report the wrong picture

Neary recorded a man-made underground passage inside the Ballintava ringfort in 1914, but only a shallow six-metre hollow remains. The lost depth may have hidden a chamber, a cache or a way of escaping danger, yet no certaintysurvives. What is certain is that people shaped the earth, marked both sides with stone heaps and aligned the work from north to south. The forgt is no longer a tunnel; it has become a trace, waiting for imagination to finish what time removed.

In a ringfort (GA005-011----). Neary (1914, 118, no. 40) records that 'the garth [of this ringfort] contains a Man-made underground passage'. All that survives is an irregular hollow (L 6m, Wth 3m), in S half of the interior, which is flanked by two small heaps of stone. It is aligned on a N-S axis and is 0.4m in depth.
