Man-made underground passage in Ballinatona

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

No visible trace remains on the slope, yet local memory holds three earth-cut chambers beneath the soil near a ringfort. The passage appeared around 1975, not through survey but through human recollection. It is the kind of place that resists measurement, hiding its shape until someone remembers the dark rooms and their purpose.
On level break in W-facing slope. Discovered c. 1975. According to local information, three earth-cut chambers were seen. No visible surface trace. Ringfort (CO142-085---) c. 130m to ESE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
