Man-made underground passage in Baile An Tsagairt (tc Na Gleannta)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under one of three forgotten raths beside Dingle Harbour, people dug a passage through solid earth. They cut a hole in the world because the hole needed finding. Field walls and time have hidden the entrance, but the deliberate shape of the darkness still belongs to the living.
Cuppage (1986, 216, no. 610) recorded a possible Man-made underground passage in one of three raths (KE053-030----, KE053-031----, KE053-032----) in Ballintaggart townland. Its precise location is not known. Possible Man-made underground passage described by Cuppage (1986, 216, no. 610) as follows; 'This circular univallate ringfort is located on the E side of Dingle Harbour and has been trisected by field walls. The enclosing bank is only barely discernible and the enclosure measures c. 30m in external diameter. A Man-made underground passage was apparently found in either this fort or 606 or 607 (local information)'.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
