Man-made underground passage in Baile An Phléamannaigh (tc Na Gleannta)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

An Neóin hides beneath a flagstone in the northwest corner of Baile An Phléamannaigh, a forgotten grave or passage that defies local memory. The stone may still mark the entrance, waiting for someone reckless enough to lift it and discover whether darkness or death waits below.
An Neóin, according to An Seabhac (1939, 142-3), is a grave or Man-made underground passage reputedly located beneath a flagstone in the NW corner of the townland. It is not remembered locally and its precise location has not been identified. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 762. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 7 August 2013
